Maskne

Maskne is a form of acne, called acne mechanica, that appears in the areas that are covered by a protective mask. If you are experiencing "Maskne", you are not alone! These area specific pimples develop when wearing a face mask due to friction and trapped sweat, bacteria and oil. Bacteria, yeast and demodex mites thrive in the warm humid air that is trapped within masks, leaving people susceptible to breakouts, rosacea flare-ups and perioral dermatitis. These factors are compounded by the stress of the new normal.

There is quite a bit that can be done to improve breakouts.  Our dermatologists evaluate what is best for each patient’s skin and prescribe a customized prescription formula accordingly.

Here are the prescription compounds we prescribe for this condition: (in no particular order): tretinoin, niacinamide, benzoyl peroxide, clindamycin, azelaic acid, dapsone, sulfur, metronidazole, etc.
